Jazz on a Midsummer’s Night with The Mark Lockheart Quartet
As Part of the Frome Festival we are excited to present four unique and hugely respected musicians spanning different generations.
Featuring British jazz legend Mark Lockheart and Frome’s very own Dave Smith on drums, the common ground of improvisation and a deep regard for the jazz tradition has brought these special musicians together on a journey of sonic explorations, heavy grooves and intricate melodies.
Mark Lockheart (Kenny Wheeler, Loose Tubes) – saxes
Dave Smith (Robert Plant, Eddie Henderson) – drums
Tom Herbert (Polar Bear, The Invisible) – bass
Elliot Galvin (Dinosaur, Binker Golding) – keys
“Saxophonist Mark Lockheart, a key contributor to the laconic lyricism of Polar Bear, has been quietly evolving into one of the UK jazz scene’s outstanding composers.”
“As a member of two of the most seminal British “jazz” bands of recent times in Loose Tubes and Polar Bear saxophonist Mark Lockheart is assured of his place in musical history. When you also consider his role as a member of the eclectic and consistently engaging Perfect Houseplants plus several excellent recordings under his own name it becomes clear that Lockheart is very much an under appreciated talent in his own country.”
